I would automatically think that it would have a 4.0 M60 V8. Verdammt BMW, get it together.

And the 330i will have a 2 liter.

it’s really getting out of control.

Yup. 40i will always mean BMW V8 in my head, and seeing a 40i badge on any brand new BMW will just remind me of what sweet cars they used to build...

It’ll have a nice flat four, but only for you.

I really wish BMW would channel their inner crazy that they used to have..............

They’ve been doing this for years though.. 340 merely suggest that this car would give you the same amount of power as an NA 4.0 would give you. Is it really that big of a deal though? It’s fast, it’s quick.. Sure they could’ve strapped a chevy 265 in there.. but that’d just suck :P

A flat four in this would work great. I’ve think they’ve lost it after introducing electronic water pumps and the 2 series grand tourer.

A 2 liter with double VANOS, valvetronic, and whatever efficient dynamics smugness they decide to throw at it.

My neighbor has a 540i I had the same thought as you. I wish this wasn’t for real, but it is. :( 335i rolled off the tounge really nicely too.

Ah, but it’s all quite simple:

318i = 1.5

320i =2.0

330i = 2.0 as well

316d = 2.0

318d = 2.0 as well

320d = 2.0 as well again

330d = 3.0

335d = 3.0

330e = 2.0

340i = 3.0

See, all very simple.

Either BMW likes rounding up or down or making numbers that are not equal to each other. Last time I checked 4.0 3.0.

Not a new thing though!

Even the 1502 wasn’t a 1.5, it had the same engine as the 1602. Later on the 315 was a 1.6 and the 316 was a 1.8.

The “i” means it’s fuel injected. Just to clear things up for those who thought it might be carbureted.

And the M235i has the same N55 engine as the engine that will be found on the 340i, and440i.

And those are the only two honest parts to the BMW naming system these days.

But in the US, the 330i will still be the 328i because reasons

anyone know if this will apply to the coupe? So we’ll have a 440, which really should be a 330 coupe?

Yes it will happen to the 4 (should be 3er coupe). Now that’s it going to be called the 440, I’m going to confuse it with the 440 six pack.
